What are the first steps?

While figuring out where to get started can be overwhelming, there are bunch of tools to help you get started. The first thing you should do is get a fishing license, which are available to purchase at your local fishing store or some larger retailers like Walmart, Bass Pro Shops and Ace Hardware. Fishing licenses are also available for online purchase. Where to purchase your license will depend on your state. (For online purchase of a Michigan fishing license go here.) While it may seem tedious, it is overall a simple and easy process no matter where you purchase your license. It is best practice to get one to avoid any trouble from game wardens and possible fines. For additional information on laws and regulations check with NOAA Fisheries.

Fishing basics start with your gear. A fishing rod gives you leverage and control, while the reel and line let you cast and bring in fish. The drag system on the reel is important because it controls how much resistance the fish feels, too tight and the line may snap, too loose and the fish could escape. Fishing line comes in different strengths (measured in pounds) and materials, such as monofilament, fluorocarbon, or braided, each with its own advantages. Hooks vary in size and style depending on the type of fish you're targeting, and using the right bait or lures makes a big difference in catching a fish. Beginners should also learn about knots, since a strong knot can mean the difference between landing a fish and losing one. Most importantly, patience and practice are key, as fishing is as much about learning technique as it is about enjoying the time outdoors.
